The Grapefruit Diet

The Grapefruit Diet has been around since the 1930s and is also known as the Hollywood Diet. It regained popularity in the 1970s and was distributed through xerox copies.  Supporters claim that you can lose 10 lbs in a 12 day period.  This is a quick weight loss diet and is certainly not a lifestyle or longterm diet.  If you want to continue past 12 days, take a 2 day rest before continuing. Some believe that there are special properties of the grapefruit and when eaten in combination with these foods you will lose weight.

The Diet Meal Plan
 - Have either half of a grapefruit or 8 oz glass of grapefruit juice at each meal.
 - There is no between meal snacks
 - You can eat as much of the allowed foods as you want at meal times
 - The meal plan indicates the minimum food you should eat
 - Note that there no desserts allowed

Breakfast:
 - 2 eggs and 2 slices of bacon (cooked in butter is fine)
 - 1 cup black coffee is allowed
 - 1/2 grapefruit or 8 oz glass of grapefruit juice

Lunch:
 -
1/2 grapefruit or 8 oz glass of grapefruit juice
 - Salad with dressing
 - Unlimited meat

Dinner:
 - Red or green vegetables (with spices and cooked in butter ok) or salad with dressing
 - This does not include starchy vegetables because of their high carbohydrate content
 - Unlimited meat

Summary:
 - No one seems to claim this diet.  It is sometimes called the Mayo Diet but the Mayo Clinic takes no ownership of this diet
 - Supporters claim that there is a special property of grapefruit that when combined with certain foods will cause the body to burn fat.  However, exactly what this substance or how it works no one seems to know.
 - This is essentially a low-carb, high protein diet
 - This has very limited menu choices which make it difficult to maintain
